Still Life in Merida
by Leah Acevedo
Sunlight slants across the rough stucco wall of a Merida workshop, illuminating a row of glazed majolica plates stacked on a wooden shelf, their cobalt and yellow patterns catching the late afternoon glow. In the foreground, a worker’s hands, dusted with plaster, adjust a hand tool near a cracked terracotta jar, while a threadbare cushion seam peeks out from beneath a pile of faded textiles. The scene is alive with the texture of daily labor, where the bright ceramics contrast against the worn surfaces and the warm, dusty air hangs still. A watering jug sits idle near the entrance, its handle worn smooth by use, at the base of the space in practical routine rather than display.
