Adjusting Fabric in Merida
by Jon Rhodes
Bright winter noon light floods the open doorway of a local textile workshop in Merida, illuminating a chaotic worktable where bolts of vibrant Yucatecan cottons in fuchsia and turquoise are stacked beside half-finished pillow covers. A woman’s hands, stained with indigo dye, adjust a heavy iron on a piece of fabric while a simple metal tea tin sits overturned near a sewing basket spilling colorful threads. The harsh sunlight casts sharp, geometric shadows across the smooth concrete floor, against the soft, textured fabrics. Outside, the white stucco wall glows intensely, framing the busy interior where mechanical pencils and lint-covered dark aprons suggest a day of active, unpolished craftsmanship.
