Soft overcast light filters into the bare shell stair tower near Soweto, illuminating dust particles floating near the ceiling. A heavy steel drywall lift stands raised beneath the low apartment structure, its frame coated in fine gray particulate. Bundles of wire loops hang loosely from the lift's upper mechanism, resting against the metal supports. Beside the wall, white joint buckets sit next to stacked metal carts loaded with unfinished materials. The late autumn light casts warm interior shadows across the rough concrete floor. Dust settles on the wood grain of the cart handles. One long shadow stretches from the lift base across the dusty floor, marking the edge of the first light.
