Spices at Late Morning Light in Beirut
by Ricky Bush
Sunlight floods a narrow corner of a Beirut habibah shop, illuminating a chaotic but functional workspace. A faded blue plastic basket tray overflows with colorful threads and wooden embroidery hoops, resting atop a scarred wooden counter. Beside them, a row of dented aluminum spice tins catches the bright late morning light, their labels worn smooth by years of handling. In the background, a wall-mounted pegboard holds an assortment of hooks and tools, casting sharp, geometric shadows against the peeling cream plaster. A pair of glass tumblers sits near the edge, one containing a half-empty cup of strong coffee, while a single shoehorn leans casually against a stack of fabric bolts.
