Sorting Turnips in Madrid

A vendor in a wet Madrid alleyway tends to a makeshift stall under a corrugated plastic awning that drips steady silver lines onto the cobblestones. He wears a faded yellow raincoat, his hands busy sorting pale turnips into a wire mesh colander, the metal links glistening with rain. Beside him, a folding chair sits empty, its canvas seat darkened by moisture. The dusk light is thin and blue, reflecting off the slick pavement and catching the hammered texture of a nearby metal shutter, which stands closed against the weather. One doorknob on a nearby door glints faintly, a small bright point in the gloom.
