Sorting Plums in Beijing

A vendor in a narrow Hutong alley sorts through a wooden crate of glossy red plums, the late afternoon sun casting long, sharp shadows against the weathered grey brick wall behind him. Condensation beads on the fruit skins, catching the warm light, while a few sprigs of fresh mint rest loosely on the crate’s edge, adding a touch of green to the earthy tones. The vendor’s hands, dusted with flour from a nearby dumpling shop, move with practiced efficiency. A pair of bright yellow rain boots sits discarded near the doorway, a splash of color against the muted street.
