Soma Museum Letters Snow and Sun in on a museum plinth in Soma

Soma Museum Letters Snow and Sun

by Devon Mercado

Pale stone walls reflect broad skylight onto a museum plinth holding a stack of aged love letters bound by a faded ribbon. The late afternoon sun bathes the left side of the paper in bright warmth, while the right half dissolves into a swirling snowstorm that settles on the stack without melting the ink. Dust motes hover in the warm shadows on the sunny side, against the drifting flakes on the cold side. The ribbon frays slightly where the light meets the snow, marking the impossible boundary between two seasons on the same sheet of paper. A sharp shadow edge divides the plinth surface where the snow stops and the dry stone begins.
