Cool early morning light falls through the misty canopy of a native Auckland bush reserve, illuminating a weathered park bench where a solitary figure pauses. The bench’s scuffed painted wood bears the grain of countless seasons, against the vibrant green ferns pressing against the damp earth. Beside the sitter, a woven basket rests on the slats, its natural fibers catching the soft, diffused glow of the dawn. A few scattered berries, dark and ripe, have fallen onto the bench, adding a splash of deep purple against the muted browns and greens.
