Silhouetted Mosaics in Sovabazar Basilica Narthex

Cool morning light streams through a high north window, casting deep shadows along the rough plaster walls of a Kolkata basilica narthex. The foreground falls into silhouette, framing the ancient mosaic tesserae that depict peacocks with fanned tails and twisting vine patterns. Gold and blue stones catch the sidelight, creating a shimmering contrast against the dark architectural void. A corridor lined with prayer wheels runs parallel to the wall, their metallic surfaces reflecting faint glimmers of the ambient glow. Dust motes hang suspended in the bright beam, illuminating the texture of the stone floor. The intricate mosaic work remains the brightest element, standing out sharply against the encroaching quiet of the shadowed interior.
