Silence Before the Music in Kanpur Concert Hall

Dust particles drift in thick, golden shafts of late morning light that pierce the dry air inside the Kanpur theater stage. The wide view reveals rows of empty wooden chairs facing a raised platform where a conductor stands poised, hand raised just inches from the orchestra pit. Canvas drapes hang from the overhead truss, catching the harsh festival daylight that bounces across the polished floor. The stage is quiet, holding a charged presence before the first note. Sunlight illuminates the texture of the wood grain and the fine mist of dry season dust swirling around the conductor's sleeve. A faint shadow of the raised hand falls across the empty conductor's podium.
