Sheltered Night in Kagoshima Rain Window

by Cindy Foster

Soft tungsten light washes a bedroom corner where a person lies buried under a thick white duvet, pulled up to the bridge of their nose. Only two dark eyes peer out from the fabric folds, watching the glass beside them. Rain streaks blur the night view through the window, distorting distant city lights into vertical smears of orange and white. The room holds a quiet stillness, the air dry despite the wet glass. Shadows pool in the deep creases of the bedding, creating a cozy enclosure against the dark. The window frame is dark wood, against the pale sheets. One droplet rests on the lower edge of the pane, holding a tiny reflection of the room's warm glow.
