Serving Tamales in Mexico City

by Tracy Dyer

Under the bruised purple twilight of a Mexico City street, a vendor’s cart glows with artificial warmth against the damp gray air. Rain slicks the asphalt, reflecting the neon pink of a distant sign onto the curved metal of a steaming tamale steamer. Inside the glass case, rows of corn husks glisten with condensation, their pale green skins against the deep red of chili powder dusting the edges. A hand reaches in from the right, fingers stained with achiote, lifting a warm bundle wrapped in banana leaf. The steam rises in thick, soft plumes, catching the light and blurring the background of wet cobblestones and passing motorcycle headlights.
