Scientist Labeling Specimens Near Las Vegas Observatory
by Luca Khan
Clean white light floods the interior of a metal trailer parked beside a concrete observatory dome. A scientist stands at a stainless steel table, carefully writing on paper envelopes filled with desert specimens. The early spring sun creates a shimmering heat haze that distorts the view of the arid landscape through the open door. Dust motes hang suspended in the bright beams, settling on the rough concrete floor and the smooth metal surfaces of the equipment. The scientist wears a light cotton shirt and moves with deliberate precision, their hands steady as they apply tape to the sealed bags. Outside, the Mojave scrub appears blurred by the rising heat, while the sharp, geometric lines of the dome remain distinct against the pale sky. A fresh label with black ink rests on the corner of the tray.
