Salt Mine Cathedral Nave Moundou Noon Light

by Roy Franco

Translucent rock salt walls rise in a symmetrical nave within a Moundou salt mine, their pale pink and white strata glowing under the flat glare of noon. Cool reflected light bounces off the high vaults, illuminating dust motes that hang suspended in the still air. Rows of candles line the central aisle, their flames casting small, dancing shadows against the crystalline surfaces. Condensation beads on nearby glass panes, marking the cool season air trapped inside the cavern. The floor reflects the candlelight, creating a mirror effect that doubles the height of the space. One beam of daylight pierces the far archway, highlighting the rough texture of the salt blocks.
