Roman Colonnade Reflected in Carlton Melbourne Atrium

by Jayden Roth

Tall marble columns with fluted shafts line the interior of a vaulted atrium, their classical capitals catching bright midmorning light. Puddles on the polished stone floor create a perfect mirror, doubling the height of the colonnade and the arched ceiling above. Humid air hangs visible in the sunbeams, softening the sharp edges of the architecture. Autumn leaves in shades of burnt orange and russet lie scattered across the wet pavement, against the cool grey of the stone. The reflections stretch deep into the water, blurring the boundary between the solid columns and their inverted images. one drop of water rolls down a column base, distorting the mirrored archway at the floor level.
