Retrieving Mail in Johannesburg

by Hayden Nielsen

Wet asphalt reflects the pale, diffused sky of early morning in a Johannesburg suburb, where a rusted corrugated iron fence runs along the property line. A burst of magenta bougainvillea spills over the top of the fence, its wet petals glistening against the dull grey metal. Below, a cluster of blue and green mailboxes stands slightly askew on a concrete plinth, their surfaces streaked with rain. A pair of hands, weathered and holding a folded newspaper, reaches into the frame to retrieve a letter from one of the boxes.
