Hanging Hanger in Johannesburg

Rain-slicked corrugated iron roofs in a Soweto township glow with the pale, diffused light of early morning, reflecting the grey sky in long, watery streaks. A cluster of faded, colorful plastic chairs sits stacked outside a spaza shop, their surfaces beaded with fresh droplets. One, bright yellow shirt hanger hangs precariously from a rusted gutter, swaying slightly in the damp breeze, contrasting sharply with the dull, wet grey of the surrounding zinc. The narrow street between the brick structures is empty, save for a discarded newspaper lying flat against the muddy pavement, its ink bleeding slightly into the wet ground.
