Rain Through Roof Holes in Cairo Grain Warehouse in on a quarry ledge near Cairo

Rain Through Roof Holes in Cairo Grain Warehouse

by Eleanor Moran

Bright tropical sunlight floods the interior of a crumbling grain warehouse perched on a limestone quarry ledge near Cairo. Thick shafts of light pierce through irregular holes in the corrugated metal roof, illuminating floating dust motes and striking the wet patches of rainwater pooling on the concrete floor. The walls, stained with decades of soot and salt, show deep fissures where the desert heat has cracked the plaster. Rusty metal beams support the sagging structure, against the sharp blue sky visible through the roof gaps. Piles of empty burlap sacks lie scattered near the entrance, their frayed edges catching the harsh afternoon glare. One puddle reflects the jagged silhouette of the roof opening above.
