Quilt on Line in Tiled Stair Hall Before Dawn

by Dawson Grant

Muted earth tones of a heavy wool quilt hang from a wire strung across a tiled stair hall in The Hague. Cold moonlight floods the space, illuminating the geometric grid of square floor tiles and the stark grout lines that guide toward a dark vanishing point. The fabric hangs stiffly, its thick texture and visible stitching catching the pale blue glow of the pre-dawn sky. Outside the unseen windows, heavy overcast skies suggest a deep winter chill, visible in the way the textile remains motionless against the gray light. Brass hooks anchor the line to the walls, while the converging lines of the staircase walls create a rigid architectural frame around the suspended textile. A shadow from the wire falls across the center of a white tile near the bottom.
