Black Wool Coat in Montreal
by Liam Shields
A heavy black wool coat hangs on a rusted iron hook against the peeling white paint of a Montreal stairwell wall during the winter noon. Frost crystals have formed on the cold metal hook, against the rough texture of the fabric where the collar rests. A small stack of blank notebooks sits on the wooden landing below, their white covers bright against the shadowed corner of the building. The scene is illuminated by flat, diffuse light coming from the open doorway behind the garments. One key hangs loosely from the hook, its metal surface dull and unreflective in the overcast light.
