Cool, reflected light fills the vaulted interior of a Damascus chapel, filtering through stained glass windows that cast muted patches of crimson and azure onto the stone floor. A priest stands before an icon wall, his hand raised to ignite a row of beeswax candles. The noon sun outside creates a flat, bright glare that contrasts with the deep shadows settling into the high corners. The beeswax glows with a warm, orange luminescence against the cool stone and dark wood of the icons. Each flame flickers slightly, casting dancing reflections on the polished metal candle holders. The priest's robe drapes in heavy folds, absorbing the ambient light while the candle flames provide the primary source of illumination on his face and hands. at the edge is the thin wisp of smoke curling upward from a newly lit wick.
