Early morning light spills across a weathered canal wall, illuminating a local fishmonger’s wooden crate filled with silver mullet glistening in the damp air. A pair of heavy rubber boots stands near the edge, one foot resting on a folded blue bath towel used to wipe scale and slime. Behind the stall, a small gas burner holds a copper pot that catches the first direct rays of the rising sun, creating a sharp, warm highlight against the cool, gray-blue water of the narrow canal. A cyclist in a dark jacket pauses on the adjacent narrow bridge, leaning on handlebars, watching the unloading process.
