Kitchen Counter in Delhi
by Tanner Velez
Sunlight slants through the open doorway of a narrow Delhi kitchen, illuminating a chaotic cluster of domestic life. A faded green watering jug sits on a cracked ceramic tile counter, its spout dripping onto a stack of chipped steel tumblers. Beside it, a woven basket of coarse jute fibers catches the harsh afternoon light, revealing the rough texture of its weave. A white dish towel, stained with turmeric, hangs loosely from a rusted towel hook on the wall, swaying slightly in the draft. In the background, a child’s hand reaches for a biscuit tin adorned with faded Hindi script, while a wooden cutting board leans against a stack of empty glass jars.
