Cold moonlight washes a flat, dark river near Mazar-i-Sharif, leaving the water slick with recent rain. A solitary lighthouse stands on the far bank, its beam cutting a sharp, white cylinder through the humid, heavy air. The beam illuminates a small ferry moving slowly across the current, its silhouette stark against the glowing water. Above, a dense field of stars hangs in the deep black sky, unbroken by clouds. The dry season has stripped the distant shoreline of vegetation, leaving only bare, pale earth. The light reflects off the wet river surface, creating a shimmering path that leads toward the vessel. one drop of condensation rests on the edge of the lighthouse railing, catching the faint glow.
