Plastic Chairs in Kathmandu

by Paula Carlson

Under the bruised purple twilight of a Kathmandu dusk, a street vendor in a neon yellow rain poncho balances a heavy wooden stool against the slick, dark stone of a temple wall. Rain slicks the pavement, reflecting the harsh glare of a nearby fluorescent tube light that buzzes overhead. The vendor, hood pulled tight, adjusts a stack of bright red plastic chairs, their surfaces beading with water droplets that catch the electric light. Beside them, a rusted iron coat stand leans precariously, holding a single wet wool scarf in faded crimson, its fibers heavy with moisture.
