Pigeons in Fukuoka at Blue Hour

by Judith Beck

Blue hour settles over a narrow Fukuoka alleyway, where the damp asphalt reflects the neon glow of a nearby izakaya sign. A weathered wooden door frame, stripped of peeling turquoise paint, stands slightly ajar, revealing the warm, yellow spill of a desk lamp from within. Outside, on a low concrete ledge, a single shirt hanger hangs limp, caught in the evening breeze. Beside it, a cluster of pigeons pecks at discarded bread crusts, their feathers ruffled by the chill. The cold, blue ambient light of the street with the intimate, artificial warmth of the interior, creating a quiet moment of urban solitude.
