Petri dishes drying on pads in Al Hudaydah lab

by Carlos Waters

Warm interior shadows pool across a clean laboratory bench where a row of glass petri dishes rests on white absorbent pads. The dishes contain translucent agar cultures, their surfaces catching the crisp, diffuse light of late morning. A digital timer sits beside the line, its red LED numbers glowing against a matte black casing. Through the window, the gray, rain-swept sky of Al Hudaydah blurs into a soft background, against the sharp, sterile clarity of the glass and plastic equipment. The wet edges of the pads suggest recent activity, while the orderly arrangement of the dishes implies a methodical process in progress. One droplet of condensation rests on the rim of the nearest dish.
