Peeling Orange in Essaouira

by Vicki Wood

A fishmonger stands beneath the corrugated tin awning of a stall on the windy harbor edge, his dark jacket slick with rain. He holds a silver fruit knife, blade gleaming under the dimming streetlamp, slicing through the bright orange peel of a mandarin he keeps for energy. The curled rind falls onto a wooden crate beside a stack of damp postcards advertising the blue medina. Rain streaks the glass of the shop window behind him, blurring the neon signs of the souk into soft, colorful smears of electric blue and red. His hands are rough and stained with fish scales, contrasting sharply with the smooth, waxy citrus skin.
