Pastel de Nata Fresh from Oven on Tea House Tray
by Danny Norman
Flat noon light floods the north-facing window, casting a uniform, shadowless brightness across the table surface. A ceramic tray holds several pastel de nata, their flaky pastry shells puffed and golden-brown with distinct, dark caramelized spots where the custard has bubbled. The custard filling appears smooth and pale yellow, against the crisp, layered edges of the dough. Steam rises faintly from the center, visible as a soft distortion in the air above the hot pastry. Dark corners of the tea house remain dim, illuminated only by the warm glow of overhead lamps settling into the shadows. The tray rests on a woven mat, its texture sharp against the smooth glaze of the ceramic. one drop of oil glistens on the rim of the tray, reflecting the harsh overhead light.
