Pallas Cat Peeking from Rock at Kuala Lumpur Inlet in beside a tidal inlet near Kuala Lumpur

Pallas Cat Peeking from Rock at Kuala Lumpur Inlet

by Janet Lucero

Thick, pale gray fur frames the round face of a Pallas's cat emerging from a jagged crevice in a weathered limestone boulder. The animal's small, rounded ears sit low against its head, blending with the rough stone texture beside it. Heavy, slate-gray clouds hang low over the tidal inlet, casting a flat, silver light that reflects off the wet sand and dark water. Rain-slicked moss rests on the rock face, darkening the crevices where the cat rests. The background dissolves into a soft blur of green mangrove leaves and distant, indistinct shoreline. one drop of water rests on the tip of the cat's left ear, glistening against the dull morning gray.
