Oud Player in Omdurman Circus Tent Predawn
by Brett Lamb
Cold moonlight falls through the heavy canvas of a circus tent in Omdurman, illuminating a solitary oud player positioned at the far left edge of the frame. The predawn darkness wraps the interior in deep shadows, broken only by the silver glow hitting the instrument's carved wood and the musician's traditional robe. Dramatic, textured clouds swirl in the sky visible through gaps in the tent fabric, casting shifting patterns of light across the sandy ground. Jasmine vines hang loosely from the canvas supports, their white petals catching the pale light. The player's fingers rest on the fretboard, poised to strike, while the rough texture of the tent floor meets the smooth curve of the instrument. A faint shadow stretches from the musician's shoulder toward the center of the empty space.
