Through the open casement of a whitewashed stone house in Dubrovnik’s Old Town, the interior glows with the warm, amber spill of a single oil lamp resting on a dark wooden sill. The heavy velvet curtains, dyed in a deep, saturated crimson that catches the neon blue of a nearby street sign, are pulled back just enough to reveal a glimpse of the room beyond. A silver whisk hangs from a hook on the wall, its tines catching the mixed light, while a ceramic jar sits nearby.
