Observatory Dome in Santa Fe at The Deepest Night Sky Light

by Erica McGowan

Under the deepest night sky, the open dome of an abandoned observatory in Santa Fe reveals a dense field of stars above the adobe landscape. Inside the shadowed interior, a metal thermometer hangs on a rusted support beam, its mercury level low against the chill of the high desert night. Beside it, a cluster of empty glass bottles rests on a concrete ledge, their surfaces catching faint ambient light. The geometric lines of the dome's interior contrast with the organic curves of the surrounding hills visible through the opening. No people are present, only the silent presence of scientific instruments and discarded containers under the vast, unlit expanse.
