Needle Ice Through Frozen Seed Pod Vancouver

by Bonnie Wooten

Pale walls reflect broad midday skylight across a split seed pod resting on a wooden surface. Delicate, translucent spikes of needle ice push upward through the dark, cracked soil within the pod's cavity. The ice crystals catch the ambient light, glowing with a faint blue tint against the earthy browns and grays of the seed pod's interior. Shadows settle softly in the corners of the room where artificial lamplight begins to compete with the daylight. The texture of the frozen soil appears gritty and dense, against the smooth, sharp edges of the emerging ice needles. One crystal at the very tip of a spike refracts the overhead light into a tiny, bright point.
