Mountain Biker Mid-Air Over Quito Trail at Dusk
by Kwame Lee
Steel-blue twilight washes the Andean foothills near Quito as a mountain biker launches off a wooden ramp. The rider leans forward in a crouched position, knees bent tight against the frame, suspending gravity for a split second. Bare branches of winter trees stand stark against heavy, rolling clouds that bruise the sky with shades of slate and charcoal. City lights flicker to life in the distant valley below, casting a faint, warm glow that contrasts with the cool ambient light. The trail surface is rough, scattered with loose gravel and dry pine needles. Dust trails hang in the air behind the rear tire, catching the last of the fading natural light. The bike's suspension compresses slightly under the rider's weight, showing the tension of the jump against the darkening mountain backdrop.
