Mosaicist Pressing Stone Tiles into Wet Mortar in on a writing desk in La Banda, Santiago del Estero

Mosaicist Pressing Stone Tiles into Wet Mortar

by Patsy Cooke

Late afternoon light floods the room, casting bright shafts through floating dust particles against the pale walls of the workshop. Hands press small, colorful stone tiles into thick, gray wet mortar resting on a wooden writing desk. The mortar glistens with moisture where fingers apply pressure, against the rough, dry texture of the surrounding tesserae. A geometric pattern takes shape in the center, while loose stones sit in a small pile to the side. The wood grain of the desk runs horizontally beneath the work, at the base of the activity in a quiet moment of creation. One shadow falls across the edge of the mortar where the fingers press down.
