Morning Light on Roof Safety Reel Lake District

by Stephen Bennett

Early autumn mist clings to a scaffolded facade in the Lake District as a sun shower breaks. A heavy-duty roof safety line reel sits mounted on a steel plank, its red casing streaked with dried mud and gray construction dust. First light catches the wire mesh of the scaffolding, illuminating the wet sheen of raindrops on the green plastic mesh and the rough texture of the formwork below. The reel shows signs of practical wear, with scuffed edges and a coiled rope resting in the groove. Leading lines of the steel poles draw the eye upward toward the gray sky. One raindrop slides down the metal bracket, catching the pale morning glow before falling away.
