Morin Khuur Player Under Oregon Valley Sky
by Eva Boyle
Heavy gray clouds press low over a wide, dry valley floor in Oregon, casting a flat, diffuse light across the landscape. In the center of the frame, a musician bows deeply while holding a morin khuur, the horse-headed fiddle resting against his chest. He wears a traditional dark deel with intricate blue embroidery visible on the collar. The steppe grass around him is short and yellowed by midsummer heat, stretching endlessly toward distant, hazy mountain ridges. The sky dominates the upper half of the view, a solid sheet of overcast white and gray that contrasts with the earthy tones below. His shadow falls directly beneath him, short and sharp, indicating the sun is high despite the cloud cover. The horse-head carving on the instrument is carved from dark wood, its eye painted white and catching a faint highlight.
