Monologue Under Follow Spot on Festival Stage

A lone performer stands center stage beneath a sharp circular beam of light that cuts through the dimness. The stage floor shows scuff marks and tape lines where the spotlight meets the shadows. Behind the actor, the dark curtain falls in heavy folds, disappearing into the gloom of the night. Fluorescent fixtures mounted high cast a cold, flat glow on the upper rigging and metal trusses, against the warm pool around the speaker. Empty seats in the foreground are barely visible, their dark shapes receding into the low angle view. Lamplight settles into the corners of the stage wings, highlighting dust motes and the rough texture of the painted backdrops. One shadow stretches long across the floorboards, ending abruptly at the edge of the illuminated circle.
