Monochrome Elephant Bathing in Kigali Temple in at the foot of a stone altar in Kigali

Monochrome Elephant Bathing in Kigali Temple

by Walter Santos

First light falls through heavy drapes, casting soft gray shadows across the stone altar floor where a temple elephant stands submerged in a shallow river. The entire room exists in shades of charcoal, slate, and bone, including the wet hide of the massive beast and the condensation clinging to the glass walls. In the center of this monochrome composition, a single ceremonial bowl rests on the elephant's back, glowing with intense, saturated crimson. The water ripples around the elephant's legs, creating dark gray reflections that contrast with the impossible red bowl. The frame within the frame of the window opening isolates the ritual moment. A drop of water slides from the rim of the crimson bowl onto the gray stone.
