Monks Chanting in Candlelit Pingtung Concert Hall
by Brody Cortes
Deep indigo twilight floods the concert hall in Pingtung, casting a cool blue glow over the stone floor. Robed monks stand in a tight formation, their faces illuminated by the warm, flickering orange of hundreds of beeswax candles held in brass holders. The air appears still, though the shadows stretch long and soft across the polished wood panels. Dramatic cloud formations are visible through the high arched windows, pressing against the glass in shades of slate and violet. In the immediate foreground, out-of-focus candle flames create a soft, glowing bokeh that frames the solemn figures. The texture of the heavy wool robes contrasts with the smooth, reflective surface of the brass candlesticks. One flame on a low stand flickers, casting a sharp, dancing shadow against the back wall.
