Midnight Cross-Country Skiing Kiruna Hillside
by Olive Goff
Silvery winter light washes over a steep, frozen trail winding up a Kiruna hillside during the polar night. A cross-country skier drives forward in the double-pole phase, body leaning aggressively into the ascent. Turf spray and kicked-up grit hang suspended in the air around the skis, illuminated by the flat, cool light. The skier wears a dark racing suit with visible sponsor patches and a numbered bib. Low-angle framing emphasizes the slope's steepness and the athlete's muscular effort. Snow crystals rest on the dark fabric of the jacket. The frozen ground shows deep grooves from previous tracks, against the fresh white powder disturbed by the skis. One ski pole tip bites into the icy surface, anchoring the skier's forward momentum.
