Mexico City Ceramic Plate
by Phillip Bell
A ceramic plate rests on a wet kitchen counter near the window, catching the diffuse morning light that falls through the rain-streaked glass. The plate's rim is chipped, revealing the rough terracotta underneath the smooth white glaze that has dulled from repeated washing. Condensation beads along the edge of the sink beside it, merging with the rainwater that has tracked down the windowpane. One drop of water hangs precariously from the plate's highest curve, ready to fall onto the damp surface below.
