Meteor Fragments Over Alpine Caldera Before Dawn in from a quiet alpine saddle in Canada

Meteor Fragments Over Alpine Caldera Before Dawn

by Alec McCullough

Pale streaks of white fire slice through the pre-dawn darkness above a vast, dormant caldera rim. Thick mist rests on the valley floor, diffusing the light from a sweeping lighthouse beam that cuts horizontally across the sky. The cold, early autumn air is visible in the sharp, silhouetted contours of spruce trees lining the saddle. Gray rock faces of the crater rise steeply, their textures softened by the low angle of illumination. The meteor trails appear as thin, linear scars against the deep indigo sky, against the warm, artificial glow of the searchlight below. A faint reflection of the beam shimmers on the damp surface of a small crater lake nestled in the foreground depression.
