Measuring Cups in Cairo
by Zoey Herring
A street vendor in downtown Cairo adjusts a stack of mismatched aluminum measuring cups on his metal cart under the harsh, flat noon light. The scene is a busy cluster of daily commerce: a white salt cellar sits near a chipped enamel basin, while a plastic dish rack holds drying glassware. His fingertips are coated in a fine layer of chalk dust from labeling prices, against the scratched clear acrylic of the menu board above. A trowel rests against the cart leg, and a linen napkin wipes down the counter. The frame shows the lived-in texture of the workspace, with bright paint against stained plaster and the gleam of metal under the unyielding sun.
