Mbira in Neon Haze Before Dawn

by Sergio Green

Electric blue neon light reflects off the deep green lacquer of the wooden calabash resonator, creating sharp highlights along its curved edge. Silver metal tines of the African mbira stand rigid inside the hollow vessel, their flat surfaces gleaming against the shadowed interior. Thick stage haze fills the air, suspended in the beams of artificial light and softening the background into indigo and violet gradients. The instrument rests on a black velvet cloth, its coarse texture visible where the light grazes the fabric. Cool monsoon air seems to hang heavy in the pre-dawn stillness of the Nadiad concert hall. A sharp reflection of a neon tube glints on the polished wood rim at the edge of the frame.
