Banja Under Fluorescent Light on Library Table

Varnish glows on the curved neck of a banjo resting on a woven chair seat. The instrument sits on a dusty wooden table in a library room in Benha. Stark fluorescent tubes overhead cast deep, hard shadows that swallow the surrounding chairs and bookshelves. Only the banjo and a small patch of table around it are lit by inexplicable bright light. Dust motes hang motionless in the illuminated cone. Metal strings reflect the harsh white glare. Muted reflections stretch along the floor in the surrounding darkness. The varnish shows fine scratches and wear. Cloth drapes over the chair back in deep shadow. The contrast between the lit object and the void creates a sharp visual boundary.
