Mason in Athens at Midday Light
Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast midday, a narrow alley in Plaka reveals a moment of suspended labor. A stone mason pauses beside a half-finished lintel, his hands resting on a worn leather apron that holds a pair of heavy tailor shears and a metal peeler, tools repurposed for the gritty work of carving marble. The shears gleam with a dull, oily sheen, against the rough, porous texture of the surrounding limestone walls, which show rust stains bleeding from old hinge screws. Above, the canopy of a plane tree casts dappled, shifting shadows across the wet cobblestones, where a discarded muffin tin sits near a drain, catching rainwater.
