Man in Casablanca at Late Morning Light
by Piper Gill
Bright late morning light floods the narrow, sun-baked corridor of a traditional riad in Casablanca, illuminating a wall of white zellige tiles that reflect the harsh glare. A man in a crisp white shirt and blue djellaba pauses mid-step, his hand resting on a worn iron stair rail that curves sharply into the shadowed lower level. Hanging from a makeshift line strung across the landing is a single, faded blue shirt hanger holding a damp, striped cotton shirt, its fabric heavy with water and droplets catching the sun. Below, a black cat sits motionless on the terracotta floor, eyes fixed on a small scrap basket filled with discarded fabric remnants and a pair of rusty shears.
