A narrow canal-side staircase in Venice descends toward the water under a flat winter noon sky, where the gray light flattens the textures of damp brick and peeling lime plaster. Two wooden gondolas rest against the mossy stone steps, their hulls scarred from years of service. A worker in a heavy wool sweater stands near the base, holding a brass trumpet mute in one hand and a coiled rope in the other, preparing for a maintenance task. Beside him, a pair of garden shears rests on a crate of discarded fishing floats, their bright orange spheres against the muted tones of the canal.
